Cuneo

The door to the Alps

Cuneo and the "Granda", so it's called its district, are a touristic area that, with its mountains covered with snow, the parks, the trekking paths, the water sports and the old rural traditions, celebrated with a long serie of festivals, is a land full of history, folklore and culture, land of rich flavours obtained with poor ingredients.
Cuneo is located where two rivers meet: Stura and Gesso, on an wedge(in italian 'cuneo')-shaped hill, surrounded by the Alps, between two wonderful natural terraces, Belvedere of corso Gesso and corso Stura, from where a brethtaking view can be seen: from the mountains to the plain.

Heart of the city is Piazza Galimberti that looks out to the main street of the old town: Via Roma. The street still has the old medieval porticos. Beyond the square, the Dome, the old church built in 1198 called Madonna del Bosco: the wide baroque cathedral was designed by G. Boetto in ‘600, and still has decorations made in the XIX century and the wonderful altar made by Andrea Pozzo in 1685.

Other churches to be visited, S. Maria della Pieve, S. Ambrogio, with artworks of the XVIII century, S. Chiara and S. Croce.

Other buildings to be seen: Palazzo Comunale, located in Via Roma, has some rooms frescoed between 1700 and 1800, Palazzo S. Giovanni, where a restauration transformed the former church into a polyvalent room.
Many buildings of the XVII-XVIII centuries, like Vescovado, Palazzo Lovera di Maria, Palazzo Ricci d’Andonno. Then the old abbey of S. Francesco, that hosts the 'Museo Civico', with historical and ethnographic collections.
