Fortress of Bramafam
The biggest XIX century's fortress of Cottian Alps
The fortress, one of the most stately fortified buildings of the end of the XIX century in the Cottian Alps, was build to protect the tunnel of Frejus and is situated between the valleys Frejus and Rho from where it dominates the town of Bardonecchia, that hosted the 2006 Winter olympics for snowboard.
For those who decide to spend their holidays in bardonecchia, Fortress of Bramafam with its military museum is the ideal destination to spend one day outside and discover the beauties of the nature around with a 2 km walk for everyone. The military museum, open to the visitors 15 years ago after some repairs, is conceived as an indoor expositions that should underline the architecture of the fortress and its value.
Inside the fort the history of the Royal Army from the end of the XIX century to the '40 of the XX century, through environmental recontructions of the fort.
The path goes through the 33 rooms furnished with the original forniture and hosts: 165 mannequins wearing original uniforms, 2000 objects that reminds the daily life of officiers and soldiers, war tools like 33 between cannons, howitzers, mortars and 100 light weapons. Prodotti tipici: Typical cheeses are Toma d'alpeggio, Seiras del Fen, Blu del Moncenisio. Typical dishes to try: Cabiettes (gnocchi and nettles baked in the oven), La Grissa (soup of grissini), il Fricandò (cooked beef). There are also quality wines, like Becouet, Avanà and Valsusa d.o.c., or white wines like Baratuciat.
Winter sports: ski, cross-country-ski, snowboard, snowshoes (ciaspole).
Summer sports: trekking, mountain bike, climbing
