Palazzo Madama

Baroque castles of the madams

Building with a millenarian history, built during the roman age as a gate of the town, it dominates the whole square of Piazza Castello.
During Middle-Ages the gate with its two towers, was transformet into a fort and, later, into a square-shaped castle, with four cilindric towers. At the beginning of the XVIII century Filippo Juvarra made a deep change in the building, by making the facade and the majestic stair that give more value to the building.
Lost its defensive role, it becomes the symbol of the power and house of the ducal family, till when they move to Palazzo Reale. Modified during the regency of the Madames Royales Cristina di Francia and then Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia-Nemours to take the shape of a baroque royal palace, it is today a refined and elegant palace.

Palazzo Madama is one of the buildings with the most interisting history and hosted, from 1832 to 1865 the Regia Pinacoteca, from 1848 to 1864 the Senato Subalpino and then Italiano, the Osservatorio astronomico until its dismantlement in 1920 and from 1934 the Museo Civico di Arte Antica.

The museum is very important for Torino and Piemonte, and keeps the works of art and finds that allow the visitors to understand the evolution of the taste and the culture of a society governed for six centuries by Savoy.
